My first LEGO robot is based on the chassis of an existing LEGO crane, this can be bought under model number 8043 in most Lego stores. I have used LEGO as it is very universal and relatively inexpensive compared to a dedicated robotic platform. My second LEGO robot is a modular design with an extra wide wheel base and two Power Functions XL Motors. Below some pictures of the platform.
